Traffic Control on Salmon River Gravel Bars

Project Length: June 1, 2001 - February 1, 2002
Location: Salmon River, Prince George, BC

Objectives:

  1. To construct and place road barriers that successfully prohibit vehicular traffic onto the gravel bars on the Salmon River in cooperation with MOTH and DFO.
  2. Draw attention to the problem of people driving in fish streams, and conduct effective public education on the resulting compromised fisheries values.
  3. Actively re-vegetate the gravel bars where vehicles have compacted the substrate and compromised plant growth.
  4. Work cooperatively with local residents to re-affirm the value of parklands, riparian areas, and communicate the effects of destruction and vandalism of fish habitat.

Results:

This project aimed to prevent vehicular traffic from driving onto the Salmon River gravel bars. This was accomplished by placing rock vehicle barriers in several locations, and providing expanded alternate parking space above the flood plain so that public access to the park-like setting can still be enjoyed. In addition, the damaged vegetation on gravel bars was replanted by volunteers and school children. Signs and newspaper advertisements were also printed to explain the project and it's objectives.
