Omineca Wildlife Patrol

In 1985 the OWP was formed to observe, record and report wildlife and environmental infractions in the Omineca region. Originally call "Game Watch", their slogan was "If poaching is not stopped - hunting could be." Eventually this Spruce City Wildlife Association program became known as the Omineca Wildlife Patrol.

The Omineca Wildlife Patrol are volunteer members from the ranks of the Spruce City Wildlife Association and are also members of the B.C. Wildlife Federation. They are supported by the North Central Guides Association, Guide Outfitters of B.C., and Canfor. Who have taken a dedicated approach to the conservation of wildlife, fish, and the environment.

The OWP organizes regular patrols in the region. On patrol, members erect informational signs to encourage ethical hunting and sound habitat use, encouraging citizens to observe, record and report to the Conservation Officer Services. Their presence is acknowledged by signs on their vehicles, they are non-confrontational and their goal is to ensure ethical and legal use of wildlife and their habitat by being a presence in the environment.

Patrol members undergo a criminal record search. Their commitment comes from being SCWA members who assist in wildlife and habitat restoration projects; patrolling is their way of ensuring their hard work is preserved. Regular patrols are scheduled. Members often enjoy picnics on these outings, with a thank you dinner at the end of each year.

Members often promote healthy public relations when out in the field by supplying maps, directional information, and even distributing hunting and fishing regulations. We have even been known for winching a few unfortunates out of ditches.

OWP offers a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to conviction of wildlife and environmental infractions. If you would like to be involved, become a member of Spruce City Wildlife Association today.
