Spruce City Wildlife Association

The Spruce City Wildlife Association is a local non-profit organization that is made up of families, individuals and corporations in Prince George who are especially concerned about public involvement in local environment and conservation matters. The membership is an amalgamation of hunters, anglers, naturalists, trappers, guides and environmentalists who provide a broad base of talents, interests and willingness to get involved in putting something back into the resources we all make use of. The group is also affiliated with the B.C. Wildlife Federation.

The SCWA was chartered in 1970 and since then has been involved in many projects, large and small. The first project was the improvement of waterfowl nesting areas on Hudson Bay Slough in South Fort George. Since then other projects have included the Highway 16 Wildlife Viewing Area, Blackwater deer tagging, West Lake and St. Georges Creek trout enhancement, trout stocking in Norman, Purden and Summit Lakes, bear information workshops, the Omineca Wildlife Patrol, the Grizzly Diversionary Feeding Program.

The construction of the Salmon and Trout Hatchery on River Road began in 1988. This beautiful log building that serves as a hatchery is also made available to Prince George schools for classes of all ages to get hands-on experience with thousands Chinook fry that are on site each yearas well as the public who get involved in clipping and releasing. The building is also available to local clubs for a meeting place.

Over the last 10 years the SCWA has been enhancing Chinook stocks on the Salmon River and beginning in the summer of 1994, members of the club embarked on a new and important venture with the construction and operation of the Salmon River Fish Fence in order to enumerate returning wild and marked Chinook salmon. In 1998 they turned there efforts to the Chilako River. None of these projects could be done without the support of sponsors; corporate and private and the continuous fundraising efforts of the SCWA members.

The Spruce City Wildlife Association hopes to successfully continue these and other projects in the years to come and would like to thank the community for supporting their endeavors.
